The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum 2027, gathering leaders from 21 leading economies in the region, will take place in Phu Quoc in Q4/2027 with a series of high-level activities such as Ministerial Meetings, the CEO Forum, and the Summit. This is a strategically significant event, contributing to enhancing Vietnam's international standing, while strongly promoting trade, investment, and tourism cooperation. Phu Quoc's selection as host not only affirms the new stature of the island city but also reflects the development orientation to turn it into an international-standard convention and tourism center.
According to Decision 948/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, Phu Quoc is implementing 21 key infrastructure projects to serve APEC 2027 with a total expected investment of over VND 137,138 billion. The projects are divided into five main groups: transportation – regional connectivity; water supply – environment; urban infrastructure – resettlement; digital transformation – smart urban areas; and APEC convention – service facilities. This is an unprecedented large-scale investment package, creating a strong impetus for the comprehensive upgrade of the island city's infrastructure.
Among them, Phu Quoc International Airport is a key project, invested with nearly VND 22,000 billion to upgrade to ICAO 4E standard, capable of receiving wide-body aircraft and increasing capacity to 20 million passengers per year. The APEC Convention Center, with a total capital of over VND 21,860 billion, becomes an iconic structure, including a multi-purpose performance hall, a convention – exhibition center, and an international press center, meeting the organization of events for tens of thousands of people.
Parallel to this is the strategic transportation infrastructure system such as provincial road DT.975, APEC Boulevard, and the urban railway connecting the airport with the convention area, creating a modern, seamless, and sustainable transportation network. Projects for Cua Can and Duong Dong 2 reservoirs, water plants, waste treatment, wastewater treatment, and waste-to-energy address fundamental issues of water security, environment, and energy for Phu Quoc amidst strong tourism growth.
In addition, projects for undergrounding technical infrastructure, smart monitoring – operation centers, and resettlement areas create a foundation for modern, synchronized urban management. Large-scale urban areas such as Bai Dat Do or the Nui Ong Quan ecological tourist area play a core role in promoting MICE tourism, high-end commerce, and coastal public spaces.
Overall, the series of projects serving APEC 2027 is not only preparation for a major international event but also a long-term strategy to reshape Phu Quoc into a smart island city, a regional-class tourism – convention – service center in the post-APEC era.
