With a total implementation time of 18 months, the expansion project of Phu Quoc International Airport is recognized as a project implemented at an unprecedented speed in the aviation infrastructure sector.

Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project is being constructed concurrently with operations.

In just 9 months of construction, the expansion investment project of Phu Quoc International Airport , with a total investment of 22,000 billion VND, is gradually completing its infrastructure and preparing for the international standard operation phase.

Constructed under difficult conditions of weak soil and alongside Runway 1 which is still operational, Runway No. 2 has achieved approximately 58% cement concrete progress for the base layer, while the high-quality concrete layer began construction just 4 months after embankment. The 3,300m long runway is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.

To meet ICAO 4E standards, every detail on the runway must be calculated for wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 787, Airbus A350-900,...: from the 78cm thick cement concrete layer capable of withstanding tire pressure up to 1.71 MPa, to aircraft loads of up to 400 tons.

At Passenger Terminal T2, the structural work has reached approximately 85% and officially entered the phase of erecting the roof steel structure from early March 2026, a significant milestone to shape the future architectural space of the terminal. Passenger Terminal T2 of the airport was designed by CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France), inspired by the image of the Fire Phoenix bird, symbolizing strength and rebirth, expressing Vietnam's aspirations in the new era.

Notably, the VIP terminal, a facility serving heads of state delegations and high-level guests, has completed 100% of its structural work, with the roof structure reaching about 60%, indicating construction progress exceeding expectations and rapidly moving towards the finishing stage.

Aircraft parking apron items are also being implemented at high speed, with some areas fully completed, laying the foundation for enhanced operational capacity in the coming time.

From infrastructure to international operation standards

Not only focusing on construction, Sun Group has cooperated with leading world-class design units from the very beginning to shape the standard for Phu Quoc Airport. The T2 passenger terminal was designed by CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France), while the VIP terminal bears the mark of the renowned Italian architect Marco Casamonti. The interior of both terminals was developed by Aedas and HOK, leading world-class architecture and planning units, aiming for luxurious standards and premium experiences.

Sun Group is simultaneously preparing for the operational phase with the orientation to make Phu Quoc Airport a leading modern airport in the world. Accordingly, cooperation with Changi Airports International, the entity behind the success of Changi Airport, will help Phu Quoc Airport gradually perfect its operating system, optimize passenger experience, and develop non-aviation services.

This is a key factor in transforming the airport's role from a mere transit point to a "destination airport," where passengers can experience and enjoy shopping and entertainment from the moment they arrive.

The simultaneous acceleration of construction and operational preparation demonstrates Sun Group's systematic and visionary approach to infrastructure development on Ngoc Island. Upon completion, Phu Quoc Airport can increase its capacity to up to 50 million passengers per year, more than 10 times the current capacity, not only meeting the demand for serving APEC 2027 , but also playing a strategic gateway role, contributing to making Ngoc Island a regional center for tourism, events, and trade.
