Recently, in the report of the Central working group led by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung surveying key projects for APEC 2027, An Giang province stated that many projects have had legal and land fund difficulties resolved, even exceeding the committed schedule.

From the decisive directives of the Government, the involvement of central ministries and sectors, localities, and investors, there is reason to expect that the shape of a modern, multi-centric, globally connected Phu Quoc super-city is gradually taking shape.

Phu Quoc International Airport: A gateway to the world

In the series of projects serving APEC 2027 , the expansion project of Phu Quoc International Airport, invested by Sun Group Corporation with a total investment of nearly 22,000 billion VND, is a key infrastructure project, oriented to become the most modern airport in the world.

The airport construction progress is considered a record in the aviation industry, with only 18 months for completion. Accordingly, runway number 2, 3,300m long, will be completed on June 30, 2026, the VVIP terminal is expected to be completed on October 15, 2026, and the T2 terminal on March 30, 2027, half a year earlier to welcome APEC 2027.

After upgrading, the airport will meet ICAO 4E standards, capable of receiving wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, 787, or Airbus A350. Operating capacity of 20 million passengers per year, with 2 runways, Terminal T1-T2, VIP terminal, apron with 120 parking stands connected by modern jet bridges…

The airport will be operated with consultation from Changi Airport Group (CAG), applying the TAM overall operation model and biometric system for a seamless, contactless journey, setting new standards for a world-leading smart airport. As a connecting artery, the airport will create strong momentum for Phu Quoc's economy - tourism - foreign affairs as soon as it officially opens.

APEC Convention Center: Architectural and Diplomatic Symbol

If the airport is the gateway, then the APEC Convention Center is the heart of Phu Quoc's future megacity. Located on the South Island, the project has a total investment of 21,860 billion VND, considered the tallest national symbolic work in this hosting. The architectural complex consists of two blocks: the Convention and Exhibition Center and a Multipurpose Performance Hall, following the balanced philosophy of "Round Heaven - Square Earth" in Eastern culture.

The items are being urgently constructed, with the exterior expected to be completed by mid-2026 and the interior by early 2027. The Convention and Exhibition Center has a soft shape like sea waves. It boasts a main ballroom of 11,050m2, with an 81m column-free span, which will become the largest ballroom in the world. The multi-purpose performance hall is in a circular form, clad in a dragon scale shell, supported by 50 pillars symbolizing the 50 children of Lac Hong, along with the familiar image of village bamboo groves.

After APEC, the complex will operate as a cultural - artistic - conference center, hosting high-level events and serving as a venue for international shows, film festivals, and events promoting Vietnamese culture to the world. The project promises to become an 'urban symbol' of modern Phu Quoc.

Connecting transportation system: Opening up a modern urban axis

A super-city needs a backbone transportation axis to operate effectively, and Phu Quoc is investing a total of VND 1,632 billion to build it with urgency. Route DT.975, 19.26 km long, is designed with a 62m right-of-way, a minimum of 6 lanes, and notably reserves a 15m parallel strip for the urban railway line. The road will connect Phu Quoc International Airport to the Conference Center.

Concurrently, the urban railway project, section 1, 18km long, with a total capital of nearly VND 9,000 billion, is the first high-quality, high-capacity, stable, and environmentally friendly public transportation project in Phu Quoc. The line has 6 stations, including 1 underground station, with a transport capacity of over 4,500 passengers/hour, directly connecting the airport to the conference center. The project is expected to be completed in June 2027, subsequently addressing the daily travel needs of residents and tourists.

Multi-level transportation infrastructure ensures seamless connectivity across the island

When operational, international visitors arriving by air will directly reach key functional areas, creating a superior urban axis. Notably, the South Island will boast a seamless space where the airport, event center, commercial-service areas, eco-tourism, and urban developments are connected within minutes of travel, mirroring the model of global coastal metropolises like Dubai, Singapore, or Doha.

Every bridge, road, urban area, and station today will usher in a new era of growth for Phu Quoc: more modern, smarter, and more internationally competitive. Therefore, APEC 2027 is not just a temporary event, but rather a catalyst helping Phu Quoc break through in infrastructure, planning, and position, similar to what Singapore, Busan, or Jeju Island experienced when they were selected for major opportunities. From a resort paradise, Phu Quoc is moving closer to a new role: the symbol of a modern coastal city of Vietnam on the world map.
