On December 30, 2018, Quang Ninh inaugurated a trio of "Air-Sea-Land" projects: Van Don International Airport; Ha Long International Passenger Port; and the Ha Long – Van Don Expressway. Four years later, the province put the Van Don – Mong Cai Expressway into operation, making Quang Ninh the first province nationwide with a modern, province-wide expressway system.
The Ha Long – Van Don – Mong Cai Expressway is considered to open up vast development space for Quang Ninh and the entire country.
Ha Long – Van Don Expressway
Nearly 60km long, the Ha Long - Van Don Expressway is designed for a speed of 100km/h, with 4 lanes and 2 emergency lanes.
The Ha Long - Van Don Expressway creates a smooth traffic flow from Hanoi to Van Don, reducing travel time from 5 hours to about 2.5 hours, and strengthening connectivity in the Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh growth triangle.
Van Don – Mong Cai Expressway
The project has a total length of 80.23km with 4 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 emergency lanes, and a design speed of 120km/h - the maximum design speed for expressways in Vietnam. The completed project has reduced travel time from Hanoi to Mong Cai to just over 3 hours.
The completed project has seamlessly connected with the Van Don - Ha Long - Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai Expressway, forming the longest expressway in Vietnam at nearly 600km; thereby, making Quang Ninh the province with the largest number of expressway kilometers in the country with 176km. This is also the only expressway in Vietnam connecting 3 airports (Noi Bai - Cat Bi - Van Don), 3 economic zones with 1 international border gate.
