As Vietnam's first private airport, strategically located in the northern region, Van Don International Airport has achieved a 4E rating (according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO).
The airport boasts modern facilities, including a 3.6 km long, 45 m wide runway capable of handling the world's most advanced aircraft such as Boeing 787 and Airbus 350. The apron has 7 parking positions, including 3 remote and 4 close-in positions. The terminal has a capacity of 2.5 million passengers/year; the cargo handling area has a capacity of 10,000 tons/year. The current platform is ready to accommodate further expansion of the airport's scale in the next 10 or 15 years if needed.
This project is a driver of growth for Van Don in particular and Quang Ninh in general, promoting and attracting investors to this heritage region.
The airport commenced operations in December 2018.
After one year of operation, Van Don International Airport made its mark on the world stage with the title of “Asia's Leading New Airport 2019” at the World Travel Awards (WTA) for the Asia-Pacific region.
Continuing its success, in 2020, Van Don Airport became an airport of special national significance - the arrival point for rescue flights bringing citizens home from the pandemic-stricken areas, with an unprecedented operational process in Vietnam.
The project also received two awards: “Asia's Leading Airport Business Class Lounge” and “Asia's Leading Regional Airport” at the WTA Asia awards, and “World's Leading Regional Airport” at the WTA World awards.
